VALUE-BASED SPENDING
Value-based spending is when we shape our spending around things we find to be intrinsically valuable. Healthy spending habits can reduce stress and increase satisfaction, because with value-based spending we are prioritizing what we value in how we allocate and spend money.
Sometimes budgeting can feel restrictive, but when we look inward and reflect on our values, we can create a budget that nurtures our unique needs.
Value-Based Spending applies to our non-essential expenses, like whether we value spending money on traveling or new technology. But it also applies to how we spend our essential expenses, like shopping at a farmers market v.s. shopping at a grocery store. All of these choices are shaped by values. What we value shapes how we feel about the money we spend.
Value-based spending starts by exploring how you currently spend your money. Try looking over your bank statements and identifying any patterns.
Maybe you realize that you spend on clothes you never wear, but you really wish you could travel more. This is an opportunity to make budgetary adjustments to put more money into a travel fund or another fund that you value to aid your financial wellness goals. Consider cutting costs where you won’t miss them and putting that money towards what brings you happiness and fulfillment.
Learn more about how we work with companies to help their employees develop the best money habits through our employee financial wellness programs and workshops. Try these financial wellness tips below to break down your expenses and see how they can be driven by your values.
1. IDENTIFY YOUR VALUES AND ORGANIZE THEM
Try narrowing it down to 3-5 personal values, then make a list of the top 5 things that you spend money on. Let's eliminate those fixed essential costs (rent, utilities...) and focus on the non-essential expenses. In that category, what are the top 3-5 things you spend money on?
2. ASSESS: DO YOUR TOP EXPENSES ALIGN WITH YOUR VALUES?
What things do you spend the most money on? How do those things fit into your core values? How do you feel when you spend money on those things? Are there other things that would make you more happy to spend your money on? Learn more about how our workplace wellbeing hub grows healthy spending habits and financial wellbeing at work for all employees.
3. MAKE SMALL SHIFTS IN YOUR SPENDING
Notice on your list what spending feels good and aligns with your values, what spending does not feel good and is not aligned. Make small adjustments so that your spending is better aligned with what you value.
