Crisis, uncertainty, and stress are an unfortunate mixture that can increase the likelihood of your employees feeling isolated from the organization. Disengagement is a symptom for many workplace derailers such as dissatisfaction, frustration, resentment and a lack of motivation.

If you are noticing any of these elements starting to pop up in your teams or employees, here are 3 different leadership behaviors to generate strong engagement through increase employees’ sense of feeling important, relevant, and connected to the workplace.

AFFILIATIVE STYLE

Affiliative Style of leadership positively impacts workplace culture because leaders choose their actions after asking themselves, “What do my people need?” Making decisions out of a people come first mentality will strengthen relationships, and make employees feel like a priority to the organization.

Democratic Leader disengaged employees

DEMOCRATIC STYLE

Democratic Style guides leadership behavior through incorporating employees input and opinions when making decisions after asking, “What are your opinions on this issue and what do you think should be done?” When employees know that their opinions are being considered in making decisions, they feel ownership over outcomes which generates engagement.

Visionary Leader disengaged employees

VISIONARY STYLE

Visionary Style of leadership is most powerful when a new organizational vision must be communicated in order to inspire employees to adopt and work towards that new status-quo. So much uncertainty and stress is the prime opportunity to use a visionary style of leadership. Confidently lay out a path for your employees of where the organization is headed and how you will get them there. When employees know that they are included in the plan for the future of the organization they will be more motivated and feel encouraged to be engaged with the organization.
